The Japanese leg of Casaro’s world-wide design tour is underway. During the eight-day journey, designers will have in-depth conversations about Japanese design philosophy and experience the essence and artistic conception of Japanese traditional culture. In this issue, we interviewed designer Zhang Tao to see what his understanding and opinions were about this study tour.
Reporter: What do you expect every time you visit Japan? What do you hope will be a different experience this time?
Zhang: This is my second study trip to Japan. I was lucky enough to participate in one last year. When I first arrived in Japan, I benefited a lot from various industry insights including design details. I deeply realized the shocking experience of the ingenuity of various Japanese industries in treating things. I am still full of expectations for this trip to Japan. The initial curiosity turned into an in-depth cultural and design experience.
Reporter: Is there any itinerary or studio on this trip that left a particularly deep impression on you? Did it bring you some new ideas?
Zhang: First, I was particularly impressed by the house 4S store at Senri House Exhibition Center in Osaka. The layout of a Japanese one-family house with a courtyard allows the family to have more space for interaction.It's fun and the Chinese people will like it very much. Secondly, when I visited the LIXIL Group residential model house, I was deeply impressed by the details of the stair handrails, including the design of the sliding cabinets, which take into account the height of Japanese people and are convenient for the elderly and the disabled, which is particularly user-friendly. I want to understand and learn about the Japanese craftsmanship in design, the integration of humanity and functionality in the home, the understanding of beauty, color, composition, and construction details.
Reporter: A good design work is that it understands the lives of people at all levels. Do you agree with this view?
Zhang: I very much agree with this point of view. First of all, I am a student on the road of design. I have always adhered to the original intention of design and continued to grow. For me, the customer's experience is the most important, and the design must not only have warmth, but also empathy. People with different experiences, jobs, and levels have the same right to pursue beautiful things. For a design project, although customers have different needs and aesthetics, only through in-depth understanding and customization, and careful interpretation of the work from function to feel, can we bring customers a pleasant living experience. Nothing is perfect, but we are always working hard.
Reporter: Which country do you plan to visit on your next design trip? What's the reason?
Zhang: Some countries in Europe, such as going to Italy to see the Milan Exhibition. I want to go to more places to experience different customs, appreciate the works of architectural masters, and understand their different ways of thinking, so that I can better transform my perception of beauty into the sublimation of inner emotions when dealing with design, and convey it to everyone. client. As a stalker on the road of design, I am always learning, and I also want to do my part for the clients who choose me, to create a more experiential and valuable home for them.
