This program "Grandma's Home" takes us closer to the two protagonists in this photo and feels this special "mother-child love" that spans blood and age. The client of the renovation is a special family from Xinyu City, Jiangxi Province. Starting from the adoption of her first abandoned baby in 1983, for more than 30 years, Tang Caiying relied on her own salary, plus the income from growing vegetables, raising pigs and picking up garbage, not only raised her five biological children, but also raised six adopted children. Abandoned babies are raised.

Now over eighty years old, Tang Caiying still lives in the old house where her children grew up. Zhang Jiagang, who has become a firefighter, and other children all hope that her grandmother can have a comfortable and beautiful life in her later years. However, the old house built 40 years ago has become dilapidated and has no toilet or hot water, which has caused great inconvenience to the elderly's life and even created safety risks.
Taking into account the structural factors of this construction project, we invited Mr. Wang Keming, an architect, to design a building for my grandmother.A unique and comfortable place where you can enjoy family happiness.

Living room
The living room maintained the style of the 1980s before the renovation
The original room maintained the decorative style of the place where it was built, and the entire layout did not reveal the logic and planning of the elderly's life.
Kitchen
Coal stoves are still used in the kitchen for cooking, and the smell of soot permeates the home, making people very worried about potential safety hazards. The entire space is also poorly enclosed, and the rodent problem has troubled the family for a long time. A small space in the kitchen is used as a bathroom. There is no water heater in the room. Grandma needs to use a pot to boil hot water every time she takes a bath. Taking a bath in this house has become a luxury.
Bedroom
The only bedroom in the house is filled with daily necessities purchased, and the house lacks storage space. The furniture is old and not suitable for an elderly person to live in.
Restaurant
The restaurant is dark and humid, and the windows that were opened for ventilation have lost their function because they cannot be opened. The roof without a moisture-proof layer has also developed a large number of plaques due to perennial moisture problems, causing the wall skin to fall off, affecting the quality of life of the residents. health problems.
Transformation process
1. Re-dividing the space layout
During regional planning, considering the future barrier-free access of the elderly, sufficient space is reserved for the elderly in the design of corridors. Restaurant kitchen redesigned. It turns out that the kitchen space is small and the fumes are heavy. The new kitchen satisfies the elderly's desire to cook without fumes and free of charge. The dining room and kitchen are set up on the same side of the house, which satisfies the reasonable circulation of space.sex.
Considering that the elderly need the daily companionship of their children, a guest bedroom area was added during the layout planning to facilitate their children to stay overnight. The bathroom is located between the two bedrooms, making it easier for the elderly to get up at night.
2. Partial renovation of the building
In the building renovation part, the designer demolished the entire original shanty town, and added waterproofing, heat insulation layers and a new sloping roof while doing thermal insulation, so that the house can get rid of the embarrassing situation of "cold in winter and stuffy in summer" and damp.

The renovated living room still retains the original old objects in the house, so that grandma will not feel uncomfortable as much as possible. Windows that open on the wall flood the interior with sunlight.
In order to retain the living atmosphere of the house, the designer chose the beautiful L&D-Ando water mold as the floor material for the living room and bedroom, which is wear-resistant, anti-slip and has a cement texture, making grandma's life more comfortable and the children more at ease.

The walls and door and window frames of the dining, kitchen, bathroom, storage and other spaces are all in the beautiful L&D-Cobb color, which lights up the entire house. The orange vitality is overflowing, sweeping away the gloom before the renovation.

The floor of the corridor is made of beautiful L&D-Munich. The texture of terrazzo makes people feel like walking on a cobblestone path in the countryside. It is comfortable and natural. It is anti-fouling, wear-resistant, non-slip and easy to care for. It also makes grandma's home life more convenient.

The aisle adopts a three-section design, containing storage space, dining room and kitchen. The opening of the skylight makes the whole house brighter, and the use of barrier-free handrails and sensor lights facilitates the elderly's daily movements and ensures grandma's safety.
In the choice of bedroom wall color, considering that the elderly need some color stimulation, a warm bright yellow was chosen.
In the design of the bathroom, an aging-friendly and barrier-free design is adopted. Grandma no longer needs to go to the public toilet in the community!
The roof is paved with wood removed from old furniture, and a small terrace is decorated for the family to drink tea and take a break. New views merge with old objects to provide new possibilities.
Since seeing the new home, the happy smile on my grandma’s face has never disappeared, and she has been holding the designer’s hand tightly. The children also expressed their love for the new home and their gratitude to the designer. They believed that grandma could live a long life in this new home!

Q: Could you please explain the changes in this indoor project?During the construction process, have you achieved any breakthroughs about yourself as an architect? A: After more than 40 years of experience, my grandmother’s old house and the community where it is located are no longer able to adapt to the current lifestyle, and it is even more difficult to achieve the comfort of daily life. Simple interior renovation cannot improve the living quality of the indoor environment, so a great deal of architectural renovation was done to the old house within a limited time to improve indoor daylighting, natural ventilation, clear living functional zoning, and flexibility. The furniture layout was changed to cope with the changes in the number of people eating at grandma's house, etc. Of course, my grandma’s new home is the first project I designed for an elderly owner. Therefore, during the renovation process, I will constantly observe the scale of my grandma’s life and design a space that suits my grandma’s life.
